KAYAKING AFTERNOON ALONG THE PISCATAWAY CREEK WITH LESSONS
Saturday, August 31 at 12:30 p.m.
Home for Labor Day Weekend? No need to miss out on a last chance of summer excitement!
Learn the thrills and wonders of kayaking as we spend a Saturday afternoon exploring
Piscataway Creek, across the Potomac from Mount Vernon. The shoreline of Piscataway
National Park is undeveloped and offers plenty of wildlife viewing.
Following a light lunch, we will go on one of two routes, depending on river
conditions. One route takes us out to the mouth of Piscataway Creek, former
tribal grounds of the Piscataway Indian Nation. Paddle under the looming ramparts
of Fort Washington for views across the wide Potomac to George Washington's
Mount Vernon estate. The other route takes us upstream towards the headwaters,
meandering through marsh plants into a narrow creek overhung by trees.
Note: We will use a combination of single and tandem kayaks.
When: Saturday, August 31 from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Price: $65

c) TOUR OF MT. VERNON GROUNDS
Following lunch, we will embark on a walking tour of the grounds and mansion
of Mt. Vernon lead by our local expert guide.
(a) GROUNDS TOUR: Washington carefully developed the Mansion House farm, 500
acres surrounding his home, to create a fitting setting as a gentleman's country
seat. He designed the grounds to include a deep border of woods, rolling meadows,
serpentine walkways, and groves of trees. Between the Mansion and the shores
of the Potomac River was an extensive park; the grounds also included a pleasure
garden as well as a more utilitarian kitchen garden.
(b) MANSION TOUR: The house is constructed of pine but is rusticated, an exterior
decorative treatment that gives the appearance of stone. Washington himself
designed the stunning two-story piazza overlooking the Potomac River and the
Maryland shoreline. Here, family and guests would gather in warm weather and
enjoy the breeze off the river. Washington also added the cupola and, after
the war, the beautiful "dove of peace" weathervane. We'll also see the bedroom
where Washington spent his last moments.
d) Ten percent off any merchandise at the Mt. Vernon stores.
When: Sunday, September 1 at 11:00 a.m.
Cruise leaves promptly at 11:30 a.m.; lunch is at 1 p.m.

NEW GROUP: FORTY PLUS PROFILE SINGLES DINNER
AT TUSCANA WEST
Friday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m.
Every week, we receive dozens of requests to start a second, similar group for
professionals who no longer consider themselves to be "young" professionals.
Every week, people email and call us saying that they really would like to attend
events such as the ones we offer, but that they would feel more comfortable
if they could attend these events with a group that targets the forty plus age
range.
In response to these requests, we are trying a new event focused towards professionals
who no longer consider themselves to be "young" professionals. If this event
receives a strong turnout, we will start up a separate group focused solely
on offering events to the forty plus market. You do not have to be over age
forty to attend; you just have to wish to attend an event where the majority
of attendees will be over age forty.
Because of our recent successes starting from scratch young professionals groups
in New York and Philadelphia, we are confident that this new group targeting
the forty plus market would be a success. Moreover, from the thousands of surveys
that we sent out earlier this year, we know of hundreds of people who have already
indicated to us that they would attend events targeting the forty plus market.
This new group targeting the forty plus market and these new events would not
replace our current group or our current calender of events. Rather, we are
considering starting this new group because our current group is doing so well.
We are already hosting over 250 events this year alone, and every Profile Singles
Dinner that we have ever hosted has sold out in advance. Just as many of our
current members really enjoy our current events, we believe this new group could
offer a valuable service to the forty plus market.
This new group targeting the forty plus market would offer these new events
in addition to our current group's full calendar of events. Also, these new
events are not intended to discourage anybody over forty from continuing to
attend our current group's calendar of events. As always, everybody is always
welcome at all of our events. Our goal is to always make every person feel welcome
at any events that they choose to attend.
Our Forty Plus Profile Singles Dinner at Tuscana West is an event for anybody
who wishes to attend an event where the majority of attendees are at least forty
years old. As with all of our events, anybody is welcome at this dinner. The
majority of attendees at this event, however, will be at least forty years old.
If you know people who might be interested in this event, please forward the
information about this event on to them.
What is a Profile Singles Dinner? At the time that you purchase your tickets,
we will email you a few questions regarding yourself (e.g., where you grew up,
what is your occupation, what is your religion, what is your age, etc.), as
well as some questions as to what you are looking for in a person of the opposite
sex. Our team will then assign you a table of approximately ten fellow young
professionals (evenly matched between the sexes) who we believe best meet your
interests. Participating in the profiling is optional. Also, you are not required
to answer any profiling questions that you do not wish to answer. We will also
ask you to rank your answers in order of importance, to help us assess just
what traits you most likely want in your table partners. For the first and final
hours of this event, however, we offer a social reception for you to meet and
socialize with all three hundred of the evening's attendees, not just the people
you sit with at dinner.
This time, we return to one of Washington, D.C.'s most elegant and popular downtown
restaurants, Tuscana West. We received many compliments about Tuscana West the
last time we hosted a Profile Singles Dinner there. Tuscana West abounds in
elegant marble and mahogany with an exciting open-air kitchen, four flowing
dining areas, and outdoor tratorria that is perfect for a romantic evening.
Chef Pablo Castillo and his dedicated staff create cuisine from Tuscany and
the rest of Northern Italy, as well as cuisine from the sunny Mediterranean
of Southern Italy. The chef's eye for detail shows from the simple to the most
complicated dishes.

We will then go into the woods and teach people how to find their way if they
get lost. At the end of the class, you will have a chance to work on a real orienteering

be waiting. We will then return to D.C.

MAKING YOUR FINANCIAL PLAN WORK NO MATTER WHAT
Tuesday, October 1 at 7:30 p.m.
Many people feel that their financial plan is driven by how their investments
are performing. While investment performance is an integral part of a financial
plan, it is only one piece of a much larger model. A comprehensive financial
plan should allow for the building of the maximum amount of wealth that is optimally
possible, being able to spend and enjoy the wealth without the fear of running
out, and ultimately leaving assets to those whom you choose. The financial plan
must work no matter what. Things like death, disability, lawsuits, inflation,
taxes, and market fluctuations can have a devastating effect on a financial
plan. Too often, so called financial plans make assumptions that the market
will only go up and nothing bad will happen to someone. Well how much better
would a financial plan be if it included a bullet proof defense and recaptured
costs on the defense and offense that somebody did not even know they were losing?
On, October 1, you will learn how a good defense in a financial plan can unlock
more of the offense. You will learn a very simple strategy that should apply
to most everyone in the room that you can take home with you and implement immediately
that will make any financial plan better.
Members of the panel will include Benjamin A. Geber, a financial advisor with
First Financial Group, Tamera Davidson, a CPA of The Davidson Group, and John
Hertzke, an estate planning attorney with McGuire Woods.

SCAVENGER HUNT/GREAT RACE OF WASHINGTON D.C. NUMBER
2
Saturday, October 5 at 11:30 a.m.
Because of the huge success of our last race and due to high demand, we are
offering an all new exciting scavenger hunt/great race around Washington, D.C.
This time, the race begins at the stroke of noon at Union Station, right outside
of the inside entrance to America restaraunt. You do not have to have participated
in the first race to participate in this one. If you have participated in the
first race, however, this is an all new race, so you are welcome to participate
in this race.
How does it work?
1) Upon arrival, we will break you into teams of 6 or 7 people. If you wish
to be placed on the same team as any of your friends, we will accomodate your
request. Otherwise, we will assign you randomly to a team. This is a great way
to get to know new people. Each team will be given a list of several items to
retrieve. The items are all of little or no cost.
2) The list will also contain a location where each team must check in by a
certain time. Each team should take whatever items it has and proceed to that
location by the designated time. If you are late, you lose points. Teams are
not expected to retrieve all of the items listed.
3) Throughout the day, at each location, points will be calculated, teams will
get a brief time to rest, and teams will be given a different list of items
to retrieve and take to the next location. There will be 5 or 6 different check-ins
throughout the Washington, D.C. Area, all of which are near Metro Stations.
At each check-in, teams will be given new scavenger hunt lists.
4) Bonuses are given to the first team to arrive at each respective location.
Teams will leave each location in the order in which they arrived. The winning
team will be the one that collects the most points. Prizes will be awarded to
the top teams.
All participants will receive complimentary admission to our upcoming Halloween
Party on October 31 (details to be provided soon). All teams must use public
transportation. Teams caught using personal cars will be disqualified.
Throughout the day, you will visit many landmarks, restaurants, schools, theaters,
and much much more! There are over 100 items listed and what you see depends
upon your team's resolve, speed and ability to have fun!
When: Saturday, October 5 at 11:30 a.m. The race starts at noon sharp!
The race will have two different end points. There will be a 3:45 p.m. end point
for teams that wish to enter a shorter version of the race, and a 6:30 p.m.
endpoint for teams that wish to enter the complete race. Both races are the
exact same, except that the longer race has two additional legs to it. Upon
your arrival, you will decide which endpoint you wish to have. We recommend
the longer race, although we understand that some people have other obligations
that make the full day race impractical.
Where: Meet at Union Station right outside of the inside entrance to America
Restaraunt.
Cost: $20 if you purchase your tickets by 5 p.m. Friday, September 13.
We recommend that you bring a Metro card with at least $10 on it when you arrive.

PRESIDENT LINCOLN ASSASSINATION WALKING TOUR
Wednesday, October 9 at 7 p.m.
This tour is lead by Lincoln scholar and public speaker, Anthony S. Pitch, author
of the award winning book "'They have killed papa dead!'- The Assassination
of Abraham Lincoln." Anthony Pitch offers truly remarkable insights into this
historical event.
President Lincoln's assassination was perhaps one of the most tragic moments
in our country's history. Tonight, learn about one of America's most famous
Presidents, and the tragic plot that lead to his death. A walk in the footsteps
of one of America's most beloved Presidents and one of America's most reviled
assassins and his co-conspirators. Stand in front of the White House and see
where Lincoln delivered his last speech and where John Wilkes Booth vowed to
kill him.
See the posh home of Major Henry Rathbone, Lincoln's theater guest, who struggled
with the assassin moments after the murder. This walk also passes by the site
where another conspirator stabbed Secretary of State William Seward, and continues
to the location where Vice President Andrew Johnson was sworn in as Lincoln's
successor.
We will walk to Ford's Theater, where Lincoln was mortally wounded on April
14, 1865. We will see the Petersen House across the road, where Lincoln died
the following morning in a bed too small for his 6ft. 4in.body. We will see
where the conspirators boarded and plotted, and where some were arrested in
Mary Surratt's notorious brick boarding house...and we will see much, much more!
WHERE: Meet beside equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson, in the center of Lafayette
Square facing the front of White House.
Specifically the statue is in the center of Lafayette Park, on Pennsylvania
Avenue between Jackson Place and Madison Place, NW, across from the White House.

COMEDY SPORTZ NIGHT
Wednesday October 23 at 7:30 p.m.
DCSYP invites you out to an exclusive interactive comedy performance as you
may never have seen before. If you like the hit TV show, "Whose Line Is It Anyway?",
then you are going to LOVE ComedySportz! ComedySportz is not a show ABOUT sports.
It is a show that IS a sport. Described by the Washington Post as "a high octane
mix of psycho-parlor games, improv and slapstick," ComedySportz, DC has consistently
been the most popular, and is also the longest running, comedy improvisation
troupe in the DC area. It has been around since its founding in 1987. Creating
a distinctive and never-before-seen show with every new performance, and relying
solely on audience interaction, ComedySportz is unique. It is live comedy operating
without a safety net. It is an exceptional experience in that the audience never
just watches a show, the audience becomes a part of the performance.
ComedySportz is competitive improvisational comedy, played as a team sport.
Watching a show is like going to a sporting event, with vendors, a stadium organist,
and even the national anthem. The show itself is a match between two teams of
trained professional athletes or comedians, who out-duel each other with wordplay,
comedic scenes, musical styles, and other fast-paced action all based on audience
suggestions. We make it all up as we go along. The ComedySportz referee is on
hand to time the games, take suggestions, and call the fouls, including the
brown bag foul, which is given to any player or audience member who engages
in lewd, crude, or filthy humor. ComedySportz is a family show. Popcorn provided.

Because our Baltimore membership is growing, we are compiling a separate list

the city of Baltimore. This does not mean we will remove you from the D.C. list.
Rather, as we continue to host more and more events in your area, we will send
you a specialized exclusive email with our Baltimore information. If you would
like to be added to that list, please email us at events@baltimoreyoungpro.com

D.C. SOCIETY OF YOUNG PROFESSIONALS EMPLOYMENT
OPPORTUNITIES
We are again hiring part-time assistants to call venues to set up events, check
people in at events, help promote events, prepare press releases and other marketing
materials, update and improve our websites, and help with related tasks. The
hours are very flexible, and much of the work can be done from your home.
We prefer people who are able to handle some of these tasks during business
hours. Most of our events are in the evening or on weekends, though, so we need
help at those times as well. We are looking for people who are reliable, have
excellent social skills, and are good writers. We prefer people who have access
to a car, access to a computer, and comfort using a computer.
If you are interested, please email us at events@dcyoungpro.com.
