On Thursday, September 19, you are cordially invited to become part of a unique DCSYP event at our Fashion Show and Chic Simple Magazine Kickoff Reception. What if all the clothes hanging in your closet were your favorite? What if your house was exactly the way you liked, and you always felt comfortable and surrounded by the things you loved? Chic Simple says ... Instead of what if, how about why not? Meet Chic Simple authors and noted style experts Kim Johnson Gross and Jeff Stone, and watch as they show you how to "wardrobe your life." Ask your toughest style questions and receive shopping solutions. The evening begins with a reception where you can mix and mingle with your fellow young professionals, and will offer complimentary alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages and complimentary light hors d'oeuvres. Best of all, this event is just $20.

Michael Karlan

In addition to promoting events, I run a full-service law firm. I have been promoting events since 1995, and practicing law since 1992. Before I started my own law firm, I specialized in tax law for several years with Covington & Burling, a major international law firm. For more information about my legal background and my law firm, please check out my legal website at www.michaelkarlan.com.

I moved to D.C. from New York City in 1993. When I moved here, I did not know a single person in this city. I found that by getting out to a lot of different events, I was able to meet a huge number of great people, and D.C. really began to feel like home. I then started throwing private events. First, I started throwing happy hours after work at various venues around the city. When these happy hours got too large, I started throwing weekend parties at larger venues. These parties grew, and eventually 500 to 1,000 people would attend each party. At the same time, Greg was throwing events that attracted even larger groups.

At that point, Greg and I decided to combine forces, so that we could offer the widest range of events to D.C.'s young professional community. We now have over 30,000 subscribers who receive emails each week from Greg and me. This makes us Washington, D.C.'s largest organization for young professionals. During this year alone, we are hosting over 200 events. Our "typical" event gets around 200 people, although our events range in size from as few as 20 people (for an event like our tour of Annapolis by sea kayak) to well over 2,000 people (for some of our nightclub openings).

In running the D.C. Society of Young Professionals, our goal is to offer D.C.'s young professional community the opportunity to take advantage of everything that this city has to offer. Towards this end, we are always interested in hearing feedback from the members of our community.

I am very interested in hearing your suggestions, comments or questions regarding anything, whether it involves events that you would like us to put on, items that you think that I should put on this page, or even a legal question that you might have.
